Self-loosening is one of the most common causes of failure in machines and plants. Vibration and transverse loads overcome the natural friction in a thread, and spring washers, toothed washers and nylon nuts often cannot stop it. HEICO-LOCK® Wedge Lock Washers solve this with geometry instead of friction.
Each pair has radial teeth on the outer faces and wedge-shaped cams on the inner faces. When the bolt is tightened, the hardened teeth bite into the bolt head (or nut) and the joint surface. Any later movement can only happen between the cams. Because the cam angle is steeper than the thread pitch, the washers spread apart faster than the bolt can unwind: the bolt is stretched, the clamp load rises and the joint locks itself.
The system is certified to DIN 25201-4 and proven in vibration tests to DIN 65151, NASM 1312-7 and ISO 16130. It works at low and high preload, with lubricated bolts, and with property classes 8.8, 10.9 and 12.9. Pairs are supplied bonded together, so they cannot be fitted the wrong way round, and they can be re-used.
We supply four materials: zinc-flake-coated steel for general use, 316L stainless for corrosive media, 254 SMO® for sea water and chlorides, and Alloy 718 for temperatures up to 700 °C. Each comes with a narrow (HLS) or wide (HLB) bearing face.
Steel −40 to 200 °C; stainless / 254 SMO® −200 to 500 °C; Alloy 718 up to 700 °C

1.4547; chlorides, sea water, offshore and acidic media; −200 °C to 500 °C
Alloy 718 washers
INCONEL® / 2.4668; high temperatures above 500 °C up to 700 °C; down to −200 °C
Bolt grades
Property classes 8.8, 10.9, 12.9 (and lower) with matching nuts; stainless A2-70 / A4-80 with stainless washers
Threads
ISO metric coarse thread and UNC. For fine threads ask us: special washers may be needed
Mating surface hardness
Must be softer than the washer: max. approx. 430–460 HV (44–46 HRC) for steel washers, 520 HV for stainless
Coatings / paint
Fit before painting where possible. Paint or coating thicker than 250 µm must be verified by test
Re-use
Re-usable when teeth and cams are undamaged

Choosing and fitting the right washer
Joint
Recommendation
Bolt and nut (through-hole)
One pair under the bolt head and one pair under the nut. Hold one side while tightening the other
Tapped (blind) hole
One pair under the bolt head is enough; no thread adhesive needed
Stud or threaded rod
Pair under the nut(s)
Round or countersunk hole
Narrow bearing face (HLS)
Slotted or oversized hole, soft material
Wide bearing face (HLB), with flange bolts or flange nuts if needed
Plain washers
Not recommended. If unavoidable, the plain washer must be fixed so it cannot rotate
Extra thread locking
Not needed and not recommended: it works against the wedge function
Lubrication
Lubricate thread and the turning bearing face; always with stainless parts (galling)
Tightening
Calibrated torque wrench; never “by feel”. Use new bolts for first assembly
Calculated guide values based on assumed friction coefficients. Friction strongly affects the torque–preload ratio, so for critical joints a torque/preload test (e.g. ISO 16047) is recommended. 1 Nm = 0.738 lb ft. UNC values on request.
How wedge locking works
TighteningThe radial teeth bite into the bolt head and the joint surface. The two halves stay together on their cams.
α > β
The cam angle α is steeper than the thread pitch β. To turn loose, the bolt would have to stretch further, so it cannot.
Loosening attemptMovement can only happen across the cams. That lifts the bolt head and raises the tension, so the joint holds.
When the clamped parts can move against each other
When the mating surfaces are harder than the washers
On very soft surfaces such as wood and plastic
Where settlement is extremely large
Fitting in four steps
1 · Fit the pairPut the washer pair under the part you will turn, teeth facing the bolt head and the joint. Use a pair under both head and nut for through-holes.
2 · LubricateLubricate the thread and under the turning part. Wedge locking works with lubrication, and it gives a more accurate preload.
3 · Tighten to torqueUse a calibrated torque wrench or power tool to the torque for your bolt grade and lubricant. Ask us for values for your joint.
4 · Re-use when servicedWedge lock washers can be re-used if the teeth and cams are not damaged.
